Link to a FILE from a Contact.

Post by pollensa1946 »

Is there any way that you can link to and view a file from within a Contact Details? Something like an expanded Notes section. The "Add Another Field" in the stock Android Contact Details editor does not appear to handle this.
Example... I want to associate a PDF file with a Contact, the PDF is stored in the phone and contains expanded information about that contact. So somewhere in the Contact Details there will be a link to that file, I tap on the link and the file is opened using (in the case of a PDF) Adobe Reader.

NOTE that these files come to me from other people so I have no way of influencing their format/filetype, and there can be more than one file, each of a different format/filetype, for one contact. There could be a PDF and a DOC file for a contact. At present I put a note in Contact Details Notes referencing the files, I then have to go into storage, find the file and open it. Much easier to have a direct link.

Is this currently possible? If not, can it be added as a new feature?

Thanks. I was just thinking that if there are multiple files related to a contact then maybe it would be easier if a single link could be to either a file, where there is only one, or to a folder containing multiple files. So, may I offer a suggestion for your consideration....It could be set up as an option or a tab in the Contact Details display...

Link to File or Folder...
...Show File or Folder (if link exists, otherwise greyed out or not displayed)
...Create Link (if no link currently exists, otherwise greyed out or not displayed)
...Delete Link (if one exists, otherwise greyed out or not displayed)

This avoids having to mess with the Notes section of the Contact Details.

Thank you, in fact, first of all I need to consider how we save the link. Our links are to be synchronized how to synchronize? Because the database does not contain these data types.
Maybe save to WEBSITE field.

Hello
I have uploaded a new file to http://dw-p.net/dl/DW-Contacts-Phone-test.apk
If possible, please try if it works?
Note that the beta version will not overwrite the original DWC contacts. You need to start it from another icon in the All Programs list.
Thank you!

The new LINKS tab works just fine. Neat, smart, well designed, excellent. Thanks.

I note that you have also included my other request...

When you open a GROUP to show GROUP MEMBERS the display shows the tabs... Contacts Companies Titles.
Can the new LINKS tab be added to this so that a file which is associated with ALL MEMBERS of a GROUP can be linked, rather than adding the link to each individual member details.

Hello
Do you mean to link to a group. I would consider adding in a future release.
Thank you for your suggestion.

I am not sure what you mean by that. My suggestion is that where a file is associated with all members of a group then rather than put a link in each individual contact details it would be better to put a single link via a LINKS tab at the bottom of the Group Members display. The LINKS tab being alongside the existing Companies and Titles tabs. So if a group has 10 members, instead of 10 individual links you have one link for the group.
So...
Presently...

GROUP
--------
Member A - Links (1--> File A, 2--> File D)
---------------------------------
Member B - Links (1--> File B, 2 --> File D)
---------------------------------
Member C - Links (1--> File C, 2--> File D)
---------------------------------
Contacts Companies Titles

Suggestion...

GROUP
--------
Member A - Links (1--> File A)
---------------------------------
Member B - Links (1--> File B)
---------------------------------
Member C - Links (1--> File C)
---------------------------------
Contacts Companies Titles Links (1--> File D)

Thank you, I understand. Now the data is stored in the contact database. If you add this feature. DWC save data needs.
It will not be by synchronizing contacts, to back up data.
If you add a link to the group, you need to see it in the contact details?

Not necessary for me. The link from the GROUP page would be sufficient. I understand your data backup concern which I had not thought of for this suggestion.

I have found that when I LINK to a RAR file the link is correctly established, but the small icon that is usually to the right of the link is missing. When I click on the link I get a message "The system does not support this". However, if I open that same file from any other app the RAR file is correctly opened by the Total Commander app which I have installed. Any other filetypes, PDF, TXT etc are opened with no problems via the LINK.

Hello
I checked it, I will try to solve. It provides two way link, a better use of the front.

Pardon my asking, but where can I find "Links" tab? There is no "Link" in Tab settings=>Activate&Sort menu list. And I did not manage to understand how to link file to specific contact? :oops:
Please, help!

P.S. My phone details: OnePlus 6. Oxigen 5.1.11/ Android 8.1.0. DW v.3.1.3.2
