Android 8 - Colour problem with List entries

My phone runs Android 7, my Pixel tablet Android 8.
The Theme settings (Early Black) and all related adjustment options are identical on both devices, but the colour of List entries (Contacts, Groups, Addresses etc) differs. On the Android 7 device entries in lists are in white, on Android 8 they appear in a strange purple-like colour and I have explored every option that is available to change this to white. No success.
