When a contact has several numbers (mobile, office, etc.), when I press the dial icon, it does not give me a choice on which number to dial. It seems to dial the first one in the contact file. Am I missing something in settings?

this is correct.
the "dial icon" will dial the default number !

changing the default phone number:
.) sliding left/right on the phone number to change the the default phone number of a contact
(you must start sliding left/right on the contact name field, and contact must having minimum 2 phone numbers to change).

the picture icon will show you the system android API for phone,sms, email, etc..

if a contact does having more phone numbers, you can:
.) click on contact name -> then it show you the "system contact viewer", where you can select also another number.
