If selected show contact as in "lastname first" in global settings, the program does not display the name in this format or display only some contacts.
Program redisplay contacts name in format "lastname first" name only in the case if calls the context menu of any contacts and return back to contact list.
In this case program redisplay only visible contacts. If make scroll of list, other contacts is still displays in format "firstname first"

only to be sure, about which account types are we talking here ? (google, local, EAS) - skype or facebook do cooking their own soup.
next you can use a real editor _> like: "Contact Editor Pro", there you see if you have saved your contact in correct name fields.
can you make screen shots ?
can you try to use the alternative sort method ?

I use the "Contact Editor Pro" and fill my contact in correct name fields.
All my contacts saved in google account.
If selected show contact as "firstname first" in global settings, the program works correct.

hmm, strange ... well your language is a grylic one ... i do not have it here ...
are you using a ICS ROM ?
i heard about, that this is maybe buggy ?
hmm, not sure how to fix a problem, which i don not have ...
you can try to use alternative sort mehtod (see settings -> global settings -> alternate sort oder.
also after set to lastname, then please set also to sort by last name, then try it again.
or maybe it is a ICS bug ?
also what i see your contacts are having multiple name fields - please try to use notrmal 2 fields: firstname + lastname, then try it again.

Even after restarting the program name on tab "contacts" is displayed correctly.
All the problems start after even a single call to the tab "Phone".
In going to the tab "Phone" program begins to slow down several times and change the display format ("lastname first" -> "firstname first" -> "lastname first").

After that, the program starts works bad the contact display format.
Including works bad contacts with no middle name and contacts in English.
In any case, enclose file with the settings of the program.
Maybe help in finding of bug.

I habe exactly the Same problem With my Sony neo V, Android 3.2 and German language.

It Workshop as long as i Do Not select the dial tab. Alter selecting the dialing tab firstname is shown first

I have the same problem as Jutrew. My HTC Sensation behaves in the same way when I use DWP. It doesn't show LastName first until I open a contact details and return back to contact list. I use only local account (phone contacts).
I've watched a movie Jutrew attached. The part with phone tab card (dialer) - I mean changing of contact name from firstname first to lastname first - it also happens with my phone.

I use DW 2.1.2-free with Polish language. HTC Sensation with Android 4.0.3

This problem start only from DW 2.1.1.
In earlier versions, it worked fine.

I also have the same problem as described by Jutrew, heko72 and CichyH.
In the settings I set "last name first".
When I scroll down the contact list it starts correct, but after one screen down there is a mix of sorting "last name first" and "first name first".

I like this app very much and I'm also sure - in earlier versions there were not these problems.
I hope the guys will find the bug soon.
