The settings instructions provides the ability to dial the default phone number for a contact. I don't know how to define the default phone number in a contact record, and can't find an explanation using search within this site.

Can someone explain how to define the default phone number in a contact?

In the contact details press and hold the desired number. Select Set as Default.
