Verizon changed my displayed of contacts by copying them.

I have DW Contacts v2.9.7.2-pro on a Droid RAZR MAXX HD running Android v4.4.2
I purchased a new Google Nexus 6 phone and took it to a Verizon store and they copied the contacts from the Droid to the Nexus. When I got home I noticed that I nave what looks like many many duplicates, but they come from 3 accounts: Verizon backup assistant plus and two Google accounts. The results are the same in DW and in Contacts.
I suspect that no contacts were deleted because a very recently added contact is still there.
Q1 -- Is this likely to be caused by Verizon turning on all groups? But I don't know why they would change anything on the Droid since they were copying from it.
I think I controlled what contacts were displayed before by using groups. But I cannot figure out how to turn on & off individual groups.
